VERITAS MEETING 3-6-07

From our meeting on Tuesday (3/6/07):

-We decided that our session time would be too short to have representatives from different viewpoints, and there would not be enough time to elaborate. Thus, we will have one viewpoint (christian) for our event.

-Speakers: someone with a sound doctrine, and who non-christians would come to hear as well. Several suggestions were: Rick Warren, Doug Bennell(previous Veritas speaker on truth and suffering), Lee Strobel, director of CMDA, Vinoth Ramachandra, John Stott, Tim Keller, Joni Erickson(quadrapalegic), speakers from traumatic events)

-Format of session: interview-style (like Inside the Actor's Studio)

-Tentative date: Winter quarter of '08! (if the speaker can make it)

-Ros's Cafe Idea: she needs a committee of 5.

Aim: a creative outreach held at Canvas in conjunction w/ Veritas

-artists can express their work (along w/ the topic of sufferring)

-can use as a fundraiser (i.e. cover charge of $2)

      -can ask local artists/students

-To Do: think about topic ideas/ speakers during spring break

-Next meeting in April- TBA

VERITAS UPDATE! :)

VERITAS PLANNING MEETING (last meeting of the quarter):

TUESDAY 3/6/07 @ 5-6 PM

NURSETERIA LOBBY

MEETING OUTLINE:

1)       Decide on a topic- DONE!

a.      Generally speaking, the topic will center on suffering (as regards health, social justice, local, global, etc)/

                                                               i.      The way we envision this talk is to invite 5 speakers representing different faith traditions and have them speak on the topic of suffering from their particular worldview.

ii.      We will come up with a list of ‘stock’ questions to begin with, and we will have a moderator who will ask each representative to share their opinion.  It will be sort of debate format, a la presidential election debate.

iii.      Then we’ll open it up to questions from the audience!

b.      thanks to a stroke of brilliance by Johannes, the current central question is ‘Where is God in all of this?”

2)      Brainstorm potential speakers --mixed religion panel (or all christian panel)

a.      The faith traditions we came up with are as follows.

                                                               i.      Christianity – everyone look please!  good resources: CMDA and Veritas websites

                                                             ii.      Islam – Danielle

                                                            iii.      Buddhism – Jen

                                                           iv.      Atheism – Johannes

                                                             v.      Judaism – Dr. Mason Lee

3)      Division of labor

a.      faculty sponsor:  ** I’d rather not contact every potential mentor at once since we only need at most one or two.  does anyone feel strongly about any of the people below?  I’d lean towards Jane Anderson or Byron Lee, only because they’ve done work with CMDA before…

                                                               i.      Jane Anderson (Jean do you think you could email her?  you can take the description of veritas from any of the previous emails that jen and I have sent, or you can look at the veritas website and use that)

ii.      Byron Lee – I can email him and see if he’d be interested.

iii.      Andrew Ko – Anne, what do you think?  Do you think he might be interested in something like this?

iv.      more?  (all of the above are MDs, anyone have any pharmacy or dental faculty in mind?)

b.       ‘email person’ :) – Jean

                                                               i.      Jean will be sending out these kind of meeting recaps and email reminders about upcoming meetings

c.       treasurer – Johannes

                                                               i.      apply for funding (Jeremy could you go over all of that with him since you’re the ones that taught us?  :))

ii.      also potentially register Veritas as a separate RCO

d.      marketing director (advertising) – James

                                                               i.      Synapse articles

                                                             ii.      fliering ad campaign

iii.      etc etc etc (see below!)

4)      MORE cool ideas from our last meeting

a.      creating a ‘teaser’ ad campaign that we build on over the time leading up to the event

b.      post interesting statistics or pictures relating to suffering with the tag line ‘Where is God in all of this?’

c.       begin the event by showing a short video with a montage of images of suffering, from local (ie here in the hospital) to global (ie Darfur, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, etc).

***FOR NEXT TIME!

1)       everyone assigned to a ‘worldview,’ please come w/ at least ONE (preferably more than one) potential speaker!

2)       updates on faculty member involvement?

3)       start thinking about logistics:

a.      funding

b.      venue

c.       dates!!

4)       start coming up with a list of questions!

5) cafe outreach

VERITAS FORUM MEETING!!!

VERITAS FORUM MEETING!

Wed 2/28 @ 12-1pm

S-157

(bring your own lunch, brownies provided =)

What is Veritas?  The idea of the Veritas forum is this: "Our goal is to unite the body of Christ on campus, engage the entire university in an exploration of truth, goodness, and beauty, inspire participants to live rich and full lives, and transform our culture with a vision of Christ."

In short, the Veritas Forum is about bringing together the university community to examine the most pressing issues facing us as individuals today.  It's about identifying the deeper questions that people are wrestling with, the motivations that drive us, the goals we strive for, and bringing together people from different worldviews to learn from one another and from some of the country's leading experts.  As described by the Veritas founders: "We create forums for the exploration of true life.  We seek to inspire those who will shape tomorrow's culture to connect their hardest questions with the person and story of Jesus Christ."

Veritas is a national organization that seeks to promote this type of dialogue and this level of engagement in university settings across the country.  It has been very successful in the undergraduate arena, and now they are seeking to move into the graduate setting for reasons that I'm sure we can all understand.  We live and work in an incredibly rich intellectual environment that's teeming with questions of life and death, pain and suffering, healing and restoration.

We have the opportunity to put together a Veritas Forum here at UCSF, but it's going to take a team of people who are really committed to seeing this through to its completion.  You can learn more about the Veritas Forum at www.veritas.org <
http://www.veritas.org/>  and also see what other schools have done before.

SPIRUTALITY AND MEDICINE LUNCHTIME TALK! (THIS Friday February 23, 12-1pm, S-176)

Consider the following excerpt from an article published in JAMA last year (20 September 2006 issue):

“Despite increasing evidence that patients would like their physicians to do so, spiritual issues are rarely addressed by 21st-century Western physicians.  In one survey of outpatients, 52% believed that a physician had the right to inquire about a patient’s religious beliefs, but a majority could not recall any physician ever having inquired about religious beliefs.   In a survey of inpatients, 77% believed physicians should consider their spiritual needs and 48% wanted their physicians to pray with them, but 68% said no physician had ever inquired about their spiritual or religious needs.  In another survey of outpatients, 94% thought it appropriate for physicians to inquire about their spiritual beliefs were they to become gravely ill.”

As spirituality becomes increasingly recognized as an important contributor to a person’s health, several important questions are raised for the health care provider:

What role does spiritual care play in health care?

What kind of spiritual care do patients expect from their health care providers?

What is the appropriate role of the health professional in providing spiritual care?

How can we meet our patients’ desires to talk about such issues within the limits of our own comfort?

If you are interested in learning more about these questions, please join us for a lunchtime discussion with recently retired UCSF Director of Spiritual Care Services, Reverend Rod Seeger!  Rev. Seeger is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association for Professional Chaplains.  He served at UCSF for over 30 years, during which time he also supervised the Clinical Pastoral Education program.  He has a wealth of experience in this field and many wonderful stories and insights to share.  This will be an informal discussion format, so come with lots of questions
